Either for breakfast, snack or <br />
anything in between, eggs are very versatile and nutritious. So when we heard about Omelegg, we just HAD to go there.<br />
<br />
Located in the Pijp on the Ferdinand Bolstraat, this little gem opened it's doors in May of 2013, and boy, are we glad they did.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.omelegg.com/wp-content/uploads/yootheme/demo/gallery/omelegg-amsterdam-menu-english.jpg" target="_blank">The menu</a> revolves around the "omeleggs", omelettes made in super creative variations, of which many are 100% paleo or become paleo by asking to leave a particular ingredient out.<br />
Otherwise, just create your own eggs, with add-ons you can pick yourself. <br />
Simply ask "no bread", and you're good to go!<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WfvhvVvUa_k/UsqD6OKtwwI/AAAAAAAAKBo/KA3UCdLa1oA/s1600/994668_10152177092406528_305892020_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WfvhvVvUa_k/UsqD6OKtwwI/AAAAAAAAKBo/KA3UCdLa1oA/s1600/994668_10152177092406528_305892020_n.jpg" height="298" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Farm Boy, no bread</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
For €8,95 you get excellent value for money; a huge, delicious omelet and on top of that, the staff is super friendly and offers great service.<br />
<br />
Along with the relaxt vibe, this is definitely a valuable addition to the growing Amsterdam breakfast scene.<br />

recommended it to us, we couldn't wait to go ourselves.<br />
Made reservations on a Saturday night, and when entering that evening, the hustle and bustle inside welcomed us.<br />
<br />
We both agreed immediately that this was an excellent "guys place", although this doesn't mean it isn't a girls place. But you know what we mean. It also reminded us of a great restaurant in New York, called <a href="http://www.dbgb.com/nyc/" target="_blank">DBGB</a>. Same look and feel, and when looking at the menu, a bit of the same concept as well, only less sausage :-)<br />
<br />
Our table was in the back, where there were also 3 separate dining spaces, excellent for groups.<br />
A real eye-catcher is the glass showcase with the meats aging.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-38K9yxVJaeQ/UrcCGH7QGZI/AAAAAAAAAI4/2wx1eOIxMjI/s1600/julius-restaurant12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="232" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-38K9yxVJaeQ/UrcCGH7QGZI/AAAAAAAAAI4/2wx1eOIxMjI/s320/julius-restaurant12.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<a href="http://juliusbargrill.nl/assets/pdf/menu-nl.pdf" target="_blank">The menu</a> is an excellent variety for everyone's taste, that even vegetarians can choose from, and most of the items are paleo friendly.<br />
The mains come with a baked crushed potato, but you can opt to leave that out (however, we actually don't mind the occasional white potato)<br />
<br />
We choose the baba ganoush and sausage from the "bites" section and they were excellent! Accompanied by a nice of sparkling glass of Shiraz, this was a good start.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
As mains, it was rib-eye and the hamburger, both with the potato and coleslaw, and again, cooked to perfection. The hamburger was medium cooked, as was the rib-eye. Delicious.<br />
Trouble with dim-lit restaurants: too dark to take a picture and the flash makes any food look like crap, so you'll have to take our word for it.<br />
<br />
And dessert; so NOT paleo, but we didn't care. Vanilla yogurt with salted caramel is probably the best thing that will happen to you EVER and is worth putting your paleo principles on-hold.<br />
And the chocolate is excellent as well, making any chocolate lover happy.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GTjHB6Z75Yg/UrcMMLuR8vI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/fGo9PdMHozM/s1600/photo+(1).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GTjHB6Z75Yg/UrcMMLuR8vI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/fGo9PdMHozM/s200/photo+(1).JPG" width="149" /></a>To sum it up: we really like Julius. Why?<br />
First of all because the products are chosen with care, like organic chicken, Angus beef and sausage from <a href="http://louman-jordaan.nl/slagerij-louman/" target="_blank">Louman</a> to mention a few.<br />
Second, because the menu provides great option to eat fully paleo, you can choose sides such as grilled veggies & salads.<br />
And third is of course that everything tastes great and our bill wasn't too crazy either: 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 desserts & 6 glasses of wine for <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 16px;">€</span>93,-. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Only note for improvement was that the staff seemed a bit all over the place (but friendly nonetheless), but that could be the hiccups of a starting restaurant.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">We'll be back.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>

If you haven't seen it yet, we highly recommend watching the movie "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eKYyD14d_0" target="_blank">Food, Inc.</a>"<br />
<br />
Unfortunately labeling products that contain GMO's is not mandatory (yet) in the USA for example, but what about here in Europe?<br />
<br />
By EU law, products that contain GMO's (over 0,9%) <u>must</u> have this mentioned on the label. The Dutch word for GM is "genetisch gemodificeerd".<br />
If you want to be sure that food is not genetically modified, you can buy organic.<br />
<br />
More info on the EU regulations on GMO's can be found <a href="http://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/biotechnologie/genetisch-gemodificeerd-voedsel-en-landbouw" target="_blank">here</a> (Dutch) and in <a href="http://www.government.nl/search?keyword=gmo&search-submit=Search" target="_blank">English</a>.<br />

talk about some other fats that don't get the attention they deserve.<br />
There are more fats than coconut oil and ghee, and they are an excellent addition in the kitchen. Let's have a look at some and where to buy them.<br />
<br />
<strong>Goose Fat (ganzenvet)</strong><br />
Rich in monounsaturated fats (highest in poultry fats) and oleic acid.<br />
It is wonderful for use in the oven, adding a nice, rich flavor.<br />
<u>Where to buy</u>: <a href="http://www.meerdanvlees.nl/index.php?target=products&product_id=355" target="_blank">Meerdanvlees.nl</a> & <a href="http://www.webpoelier.nl/ganzen-vet.html" target="_blank">Webpoelier</a><br />
<br />
<strong>Duck Fat (eendenvet)</strong><br />
Duck fat is great for roasting potatoes (yes, both white and sweet!) Add some rosemary and you're golden!<br />
Where to buy: <a href="http://www.webpoelier.nl/gevogelte/eenden-vet-237.html" target="_blank">Webpoelier</a><br />
<br />
<strong>Pork Fat (reuzel)</strong><br />
Not used very often in NL anymore, but this is wonderful for cooknig your eggs in the morning.<br />
Where to buy: <a href="http://www.amazingoriental.com/content/reuzel-4x25kg" target="_blank">Amazing Oriental</a><br />
<br />
<strong>Beef Fat (rundvet)</strong><br />
<div>
Another very tasty source of fat, great for roasting veggies!</div>
<div>
In Amsterdam, there is one butcher that carries it for sure: <a href="http://louman-jordaan.nl/" target="_blank">Slagerij Louman</a>.</div>
<div>
Otherwise, check: <a href="http://bit.ly/18TKjSM" target="_blank">Beef & Steak</a></div>
<br />
For local butchers that sell poultry fats, check a <a href="http://www.poelier.nl/zoek-een-poelier/noord-holland/poeliers-in-amsterdam.html" target="_blank">poelier</a>.<br />
More more information on these fats, check <a href="http://www.marksdailyapple.com/yet-another-primal-primer-animal-fats/#axzz2n9nnh2OY" target="_blank">this post</a> by Mark Sisson.<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9hz5UsPmNQA/UoIJI7mg_qI/AAAAAAAAJtQ/xkyQv3N6Q0A/s1600/bears-salmon_1692222i.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="143" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9hz5UsPmNQA/UoIJI7mg_qI/AAAAAAAAJtQ/xkyQv3N6Q0A/s200/bears-salmon_1692222i.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
Choosing the right fish is a bit more complicated than meats, since you're dealing with 2 very different sources: wild-caught & farmed fish.<br />
Let's be clear; wild-caught fish is <u>not</u> organic, simply because the environment in which the fish was living, could have possibly been "polluted", meaning that there could have been elements present that aren't considered organic. However, you can assume that the fish did live in the most natural way possible.<br />
<br />
<br />
Farmed fish <u>can</u> be organic, simply because it's possible to fully control the environment in which the fish was grown, and the type of food it ate.<br />
The fishfarmers don't use any hormones and anti-biotics, and the fish has a larger living space.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U--TILCfoyg/UoIBJZHHb0I/AAAAAAAAJs0/Y9VEiA_ce3I/s1600/ekoviskeurmerk80.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U--TILCfoyg/UoIBJZHHb0I/AAAAAAAAJs0/Y9VEiA_ce3I/s1600/ekoviskeurmerk80.jpg" /></a><b>So how do you recognize organic fish? </b><br />
<br />
Any fish labeled with the <b>Eko</b> symbol, is organic, but there are a few other certifications that will also ensure you have organic fish.<br />
Via <a href="http://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/visserij/keurmerk-vis" target="_blank">this link</a>, you have the offical overview of all certifications. Both the <b>Krav</b> & <b>Naturland</b> fish is organic as well.<br />
<br />
<b>Where to buy?</b><br />
<br />
Organic fish is sold at the Ekoplaza shops, or check the following online shops:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.biologischeviswinkel.nl/">www.biologischeviswinkel.nl</a><br />
<a href="http://www.fixfisch.nl/biologisch" target="_blank">www.fixfisch.nl</a><br />
<a href="http://www.ekokopen.nl/biologische-gerookte-zalm.html" target="_blank">www.ekokopen.nl</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TbZKQvtrCpw/UoIITcHhnBI/AAAAAAAAJtE/7RYyB7QqcR8/s1600/portrait_200_msc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TbZKQvtrCpw/UoIITcHhnBI/AAAAAAAAJtE/7RYyB7QqcR8/s200/portrait_200_msc.jpg" width="148" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
When choosing fish, at least always make sure you pick sustainably caught fish. These fish have been caught with respect for nature and other animals.<br />
Sometimes the package doesn't have certification, but it should always show where the fish comes from.<br />
Via this <a href="http://www.goedevis.nl/wat-kun-jij-doen/download-VISwijzer" target="_blank">handy guide</a>, you can check whether the fish is sustainably caught, or whether it's endangered or not.<br />

But, if you want to know about places where you can keep things fairly Paleo, that shouldn't be a problem.<br />
<br />
One of our personal favorites, is <b>Jaspers</b>. Open since late 2011, this place always manages to amaze and surprise us every time we visit.<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iv8CQ4Iao8g/UmKpFgAXwfI/AAAAAAAAImM/q0NqdtlaMyQ/s1600/jasper2.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="218" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iv8CQ4Iao8g/UmKpFgAXwfI/AAAAAAAAImM/q0NqdtlaMyQ/s320/jasper2.png" width="320" /></a>It's hard to find a restaurant with a personal touch these days, but Jaspers sure makes up for it.<br />
From your table you can look straight into the open kitchen in the back, where chef Jasper and his team are working their magic.<br />
The menu changes bi-weekly, and if you makes reservations in advance, they will make sure they accommodate any dietary requests, such as gluten-free for example.<br />
All ingredients all based on the seasons, and were possible, organic.<br />
<br />
You can choose the 3-course menu, and add additional courses in between if you like. A 3-course meal costs €38,- or you can even choose to just have a main and dessert for €29,50.<br />
<br />
During our visit, we didn't worry too much about the paleo side of things, but as said before, there is always <br />
a way to work around your dietary needs.<br />
<br />
Pay them a visit, you'll not be sorry!<br />

In our humble opinion, we believe it was a huge succes!<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DfKneXu54ds/Uk7HK_TSF6I/AAAAAAAAIds/-XOMfZI-kQM/s1600/Paleo+bread+-+Flickr+-+Photo+Sharing1!.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DfKneXu54ds/Uk7HK_TSF6I/AAAAAAAAIds/-XOMfZI-kQM/s320/Paleo+bread+-+Flickr+-+Photo+Sharing1!.png" width="307" /></a><br />
Below the recipe and also the locations on where to get the ingredients.<br />
<br />
<b>5 eggs</b> (Both Aldi & Dirk van den Broek sell the best priced organic eggs)<br />
<b>60 grams of psyllium husk*</b> (sold at the <a href="https://plus.google.com/102229946389367989885/about?gl=nl&hl=en" target="_blank">Volkskruidentuin</a>, look for t<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/bf/ProduktSpo%C5%BCywczyIndia.jpg/200px-ProduktSpo%C5%BCywczyIndia.jpg" target="_blank">his</a> pakage)<br />
<b>40 grams of flaxseeds</b> (sold at De Tuinen, EkoPlaza or get it <a href="http://www.deweegschaal.nl/gezond/?tt=3837_12_152969_&r=%2Fprivate-label%2Flijnzaad-gebroken-500gr" target="_blank">online</a>)<br />
<b>100 grams of sunflower- & pumpkinseed mix</b> (sold at de De Tuinen, EkoPlaza)<br />
<b>3 tbsp olive oil</b> (local supermarket)<br />
<b>1 tsp baking powder</b> (at EkoPlaza or <a href="http://www.deweegschaal.nl/gezond/?tt=3837_12_152969_&r=%2Fnatufood%2Fwijnsteenbakpoeder-100" target="_blank">online</a>)<br />
<b>1 tsp baking soda (</b>at<b> </b><a href="https://www.facebook.com/DunYongAmsterdam" target="_blank">Dun Yong</a><b>)</b><br />
<b>1/2 cup of coconut milk or water</b><br />
<b>1/4 tsp salt</b><br />
<br />
* The opinion on psyllium husk being paleo is 50/50. Personally, we think it's a good alternative, and better than the other gluten free options, such as corn starch.<br />
<br />
Pre-heat the oven to 170C. Mix the dry and wet ingredients well, scoop the mixture into a loafpan. The mix can seem a bit dry, but it will rise during baking. Bake for about 55 mins.<br />

<br />
The closest product to butter without dairy, is without a doubt, ghee. It's origin is in South Asia and is used for both cooking and rituals.<br />
<br />
Traditionally, ghee comes from cow's milk, and it's prepared by simmering butter and removing all residue (milk solids) Therefore ghee is also ok to use by people with a dairy allergy.<br />
However, some ghee might have a small percentage of milk solids left, so it's important to always check the label. Ghee has a long shelf life and can be kept outside the fridge, also after opening.<br />

You might have heard of clarified butter, and often ghee is referred to as clarified butter as well. In the broader sense, this is correct, although the preparation process is slightly different.<br />
Clarified butter is made after the water has evaporated and the milk solids are removed, whereas with ghee the milk solids are simmered in the butter, creating a more nuttier taste.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Ghee all over the world</b><br />
<br />
There are many varieties of ghee all over the world, with each country having it's own preparation method and use. Some other names are:<br />
<ul>
<li>Brown Butter (England)</li>
<li>Beurre Noisette (France) </li>
<li>Smen (Morocco)</li>
<li>Manteiga de garrafa (Brazil)</li>
<li>Butterschmalz (Germany)</li>
</ul>

<br />
This is definitely the best ghee we've tasted so far. Soft and creamy, it keeps it's texture even when the room<br />
temperature is a bit higher.<br />
Some ghee can be a bit crumbly, where this ghee remains smooth, like a soft spread. The aroma is beautiful, and once heated, fills your kitchen with an delicious buttery smell.<br />
Tasting both nutty and buttery, this ghee is a feast for the senses!<br />

Standard diet rules that this is a BAD choice, since it's a source of saturated fats, but we know <a href="http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/early/2010/01/13/ajcn.2009.27725.abstract" target="_blank">better</a>.<br />
Good news is, that there are more and more brands and choices coming out, but the brand you will encounter most in the Netherlands, is Royal Green.<br />
<br />
Royal Green is a brand by Frenchtop Natural Care Products, a Dutch company located in Hoorn.<br />
Founded in 1979, they produce hair care, skin care, sun care and food supplements. Their products are sold in over 35 countries worldwide.<br />
<br />
<b>Why coconut oil?</b><br />
Coconut oil is a great source of <u>MCT's</u> (Medium Chain Triglycerides) which are metabolized differently by the body. It is <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8654328" target="_blank">shown</a> that MCT's increase energy expenditure by 5% in 24 hours.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-i4dX15IERgk/UhJMe_KmBHI/AAAAAAAAAGM/VUy1Vto1nbU/s1600/IMG_4822.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-i4dX15IERgk/UhJMe_KmBHI/AAAAAAAAAGM/VUy1Vto1nbU/s320/IMG_4822.JPG" width="320" /></a>About 50% of the fatty acids is <u>Lauric acid</u>, which helps fight off bacteria, fungi and viruses.<br />
<br />
Coconut oil is very <u>heat stable</u>, it will not oxidize easily, making it very suitable for baking and frying.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19437058" target="_blank">Study</a> shows that it lowers total and LDL <u>cholesterol</u>.<br />
<br />
Coconut oil <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8696422" target="_blank">reduces your hunger</a>, causing to you to eat fewer calories and lose weight.<br />
<br />
<b>Why Royal Green Coconut Cream?</b><br />
Not only is this a fantastic product on its own, but it is organic, unrefined coconut oil. This ensures that the oil is obtained without the use of bleaching, chemicals or any added ingredients to improve shelf life or purify the oil. Tubs are available in various sizes: 250 ml, 500 ml & 1500 ml.<br />
<br />

Another brand caught our eye, since the label read "gluten- soy- & dairy free". It was called <a href="http://www.boojabooja.com/ice_cream.asp" target="_blank">BoojaBooja</a>, and the assortment had funky names like "Hunky Punky chocolate" & "Coconut Hullabaloo"<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Krxw6Vng2Fo/Uf-HQRUlhJI/AAAAAAAAAF8/vkdbYPzsrxc/s1600/cavefoodkitchen+op+Instagram.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Krxw6Vng2Fo/Uf-HQRUlhJI/AAAAAAAAAF8/vkdbYPzsrxc/s320/cavefoodkitchen+op+Instagram.png" width="319" /></a><a href="http://www.boojabooja.com/ice_cream_ingredients.asp" target="_blank">Ingredients</a> were water, agave, cashew nuts & a type of flavouring, so we couldn't resist and bought 2 small cups to try.<br />
The company is from the United Kingdom (Norfolk) and was founded in 1999, and started out making chocolate truffles.<br />
<br />
For a non-dairy ice cream, the taste and texture a surprisingly good, the chocolate very rich and the coconut was very nice as well.<br />
Only down-side in our opinion is the use of agave syrup. For some reason, agave has gotten the reputation of being a "healthier" substitution for sugar, but we don''t really understand why.<br />
Agave is actually higher in fructose than regular sugar, which also explains why the ice-cream tastes really (too) sweet. More on agave can be read <a href="http://www.marksdailyapple.com/is-it-primal-7-more-foods-scrutinized/#axzz2b5ivUs61" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
Our verdict?<br />
We won't buy it again, and for 2 reasons:<br />
1) the price (small tub €2,90 & big tub €9,75)<br />
2) agave syrup.<br />
<br />

Before delivery we got a bit worried, since the temperature rose well above the 30's (C), so expecting the worst, we picked up the package from the nearest "Pakje Gemak" location.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kCaNf6HdZ8s/Ue_NXkI99ZI/AAAAAAAAAFE/EL9HSl-8y60/s1600/SAM_6306.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kCaNf6HdZ8s/Ue_NXkI99ZI/AAAAAAAAAFE/EL9HSl-8y60/s320/SAM_6306.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The box</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Our order included the following:<br />
<br />
- 2 steaks<br />
- 4 beefburgers<br />
- 3 packages of bacon<br />
- 8 chicken thighs (1,2 kg)<br />
- 1 mixed cat food package<br />
<br />
Total including shipping: €47,37<br />
<br />
The main reason to order was for the organic chicken, since that is usually quite expensive. Experience tells us that chicken thighs are actually a lot nicer and cheaper than fillets :-)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LfotyEUKwUg/Ue_PxuPE4GI/AAAAAAAAAFc/jU8G-UrgyBo/s1600/SAM_6309.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LfotyEUKwUg/Ue_PxuPE4GI/AAAAAAAAAFc/jU8G-UrgyBo/s320/SAM_6309.JPG" width="320" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uThMgoYehEk/Ue_PvYNVu6I/AAAAAAAAAFU/scYV45YL2FU/s1600/SAM_6307.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uThMgoYehEk/Ue_PvYNVu6I/AAAAAAAAAFU/scYV45YL2FU/s320/SAM_6307.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />
The order is packaged in dry ice, which has a temperature of <br />
about -78C and keeps the meat under a temperature of -20C <br />
for about 36 hours. Our order was still freezing cold, excellent!<br />
<br />
<br />
Inside the box is the insulation packaging, in which the frozen meat is kept, together with the dry ice. <br />
When opening in this weather, the "steam" was coming off.<br />
Don't touch the dry ice with your hands, this can cause freeze burns!<br />
<br />
The mixed catfood package was sealed and packaged separately, and had some interesting items like quail, duck, chicken, fish and an mix of meat and offal.<br />
<br />
All in all a good experience, we can't wait to start cooking soon!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.okvlees.nl/">www.okvlees.nl</a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Shipping is always a flat fee of € 6,75, so they recommend to order with a group of people, to reduce the overall costs.<br />

Honestly, when we went to Narbonne, it wasn't with the intention to write about it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The epiphany only came later; this is a great Paleo friendly place!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GYkrGlpMExM/UWv1wMQePJI/AAAAAAAAGuc/yu2futxDhms/s1600/DSC_3093_2010-10-06_11-55-30_640x425.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GYkrGlpMExM/UWv1wMQePJI/AAAAAAAAGuc/yu2futxDhms/s400/DSC_3093_2010-10-06_11-55-30_640x425.JPG" height="265" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Our visit wasn't the first, we've eaten here already a few times before and it has been excellent every time. The reason why it has made it on our Paleo list, is simply that their <a href="http://www.narbonne.nl/index.php/menukaart" target="_blank">menu</a> is very Paleo complaint, pretty much all the items are ok to have (except for the burrito & pasta) and if you don't mind letting the reigns go a bit, we HIGHLY reccommend the Teriyaky beef.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The menu offers 2 possibilities; either a regular main course, or create your own meal with 2-3 smaller dishes. If needed, you can always order additional dishes along the way.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Are all ingredients paleo? We are not sure, and quite honestly, we don't mind. Going out for dinner paleo-style is a challenge as it is, and Narbonne makes it a lot more enjoyable! Delicious!</span><br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XxJceHcAaVU/UUA4u1xryMI/AAAAAAAAAC4/tthpJ2H69EY/s1600/cow-field-hhh-001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XxJceHcAaVU/UUA4u1xryMI/AAAAAAAAAC4/tthpJ2H69EY/s320/cow-field-hhh-001.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">In The Netherlands it isn't very common (yet) to refer to meats as either grain-fed or grass-fed, so if you are looking to buy grass-fed meats, this requires a bit of research.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The Dutch term is "grasgevoerd", but you won't find this term in the supermarkets.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Even of meats that are organic, cannot be safely assumed that the animal was grass-fed.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Organic with regards to the feed of the animal only guarantees that the food does not contains any hormones & antibiotics.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b>Why eat grass-fed meat?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Cows are meant to eat grass and grass only, period. Their digestive system is complex, and just as with humans, putting the right fuel in, will also result in a better outcome.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">(we highly recommend watching Food Inc. by the way)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Grass-fed meat is higher in omega-3 (up to 6 times higher). Omega 3 is good for you. Grain-fed meats are higher in omega-6.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Grass-fed meats don't contain hormones or antbiotics.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Grass-fed cow = happier cow.</span><br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">What about Irish beef?</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It's not a guarantee that Irish beef is 100% grass-fed, since it is possible some grains will be added to their diet in winter.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Accoding to their <a href="http://www.ah.nl/puureneerlijk/scharrelvlees" target="_blank">website</a>, Albert Heijn claims to sell Irish beef in the "Puur & Eerlijk" line, but that the animals do get fed grain on occasion.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Vomar sells Angus beef, but no info on their <a href="http://www.vomar.nl/over-vomar-voordeelmarkt/assortiment/onze-eigen-slagerij" target="_blank">website</a> is found whether it's 100% grass-fed or not.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">More on Irish beef: <a href="http://www.iersrundvlees.com/pdf/PureLife.pdf" target="_blank">www.iersrundvlees.com</a> (so look for the Pure Life label)</span><br />

All supermarkets sell various kinds, and looking at the package, all chickens are living in happy chicken land, somewhere on a farm picking bugs and all sorts of stuff from the ground (like they should)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Well, not really. You can tell how a chicken has lived according to the code printed on the eggs.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MsXqxtKudsQ/UTN5qnoZkuI/AAAAAAAAABQ/bqYeMVb7Pjc/s1600/ei.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MsXqxtKudsQ/UTN5qnoZkuI/AAAAAAAAABQ/bqYeMVb7Pjc/s1600/ei.jpg" /></a><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">In The Netherlands there are 4 types:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">0 - biologisch (organic)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">1 - vrije-uitloop ei (free-range)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">2 - scharrel ei (range or cage-free)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">3 - kooi ei (cage-eggs, forbidden since 2012)</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The code should be printed on every egg, so when in doubt, always check to make sure you have the eggs you want.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">For example, the term "scharrel" is used quite often and has gotten (in our opinion) a reputation that is a bit of a deception. Scharrel in Dutch means as much as "to rummage about" so it insinuates that the animal has lots of space to move around.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It is also used for meats, a topic that will be addressed in the future as well.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So how much space does the chicken really have? And does it go outside? What does it eat?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b>Kooi ei</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So technically it isn't possible anymore to purchase eggs that come from chickens in cages, but unfortunately it can still happen that certain products (like mayonnaise, baked goods, etc.) can contain cage-eggs. Dutch food "guard dog" <a href="http://foodwatch.nl/pers/persberichten/12__2012/foodwatch_voedingsindustrie_dringt_consument_kooieieren_op/index_nl.html" target="_blank">Foodwatch</a> is campaigning against these types of products since 2012. Currently, countries like Italy, Greece & Cyprus still produce cage eggs that can end up somewhere in Europe in various products.</span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Comparison scharrel & vrije-uitloop</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b>Scharrel ei</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">These chickens stay indoor all the time, and have a space the size of 2 A4 sheets. Their beaks are cut and they get 10 to 17 hours of light (artificial) Unlike the cage chicken, they can sit on a perch.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b>Vrije-uitloop ei</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">These chicks get to go outside (during the day), therefore have more space to themselves. Also their beaks will be cut (or partially burnt) and just like codes 3 & 2, their food most likely will contain antibiotics.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b>Biologisch ei</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">These girls will live as close to their nature as humans made possible. They get to keep their beaks, take dust baths, go outside (minimum of 8 hours) and they do not get treated with antibiotics.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">However, in all cases, their food can contain grains, only in the case of biologisch they will eat grass as well and their food is free of pesticides, hormones & antibiotics.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">In- & outside space of biologisch</td></tr>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br />On some packages you'll see the "beter leven keurmerk", which is a star system to indicate the quality of life the animal had. </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">3 stars is optimal of course, more info is found here: <a href="http://www.blogger.com/goog_1540405326">www.</a></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><a href="http://beterleven.dierenbescherming.nl/kippen-eieren">beterleven.dierenbescherming.nl/kippen-eieren</a> (Dutch)</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The eggs Benedict was one of our choices, and the other option was the paleo-fied one: 2 poached eggs, hold the bread and 3 sides, bacon, sausage & avocado.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Food came out a bit cold, and without the toast, you can clearly see something's missing on your plate.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It was tasty, but not mind blowing.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">Either way, in the last 4 years
Amsterdam has gone through a positive change with regards to coffee &
brunch places, G&T 's is a nice addition and the drinks menu (and stripper pole next to the bar) has made
us curious enough to re-visit soon.</span><o:p></o:p></div>
